The Houston Texans selected Illinois DE/OLB Whitney Mercilus with the twenty-sixth pick in the first round. Most thought Mercilus would go in the top twenty so the Texans wasted little time in deciding on Mercilus.
Whitney Mercilus is a 6' 4" 264 pound DE/OLB who will provide depth at OLB after the loss of Mario Williams. The Texans could have Mercilus, Barwin and Brooks all on the field at the same time in passing situations.
Mercilus led the nation with 16 sacks and 9 forced fumbles in 2011 for Illinois. Mercilus also had 22.5 tackles for loss. That was enough to earn him All-American and win the Ted Hendricks Award as the best defensive end in the country.
The second and third rounds will be tomorrow and the Texans will most likely look to fill needs at wide receiver and offensive line. Saturday the draft wraps up with rounds four through seven.
